Start with the Ram 1500 for daily driving and towing or hauling that fits the exact truck’s ratings. Move to the Ram 2500 when the job calls for greater capacity, a properly equipped fifth-wheel setup or a compatible snowplow application. Shepard Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram sells both truck lines in Thomaston, so you can work through that decision with the actual configurations rather than choosing from two headline numbers.
| What are you comparing? | What does the Ram 1500 offer? | What does the Ram 2500 offer? |
|---|---|---|
| Truck type | Light-duty | Heavy-duty | Maximum towing when properly equipped | Up to 11,610 lb | Up to 20,000 lb with available High-Output 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 |
| Engine choices | 3.6L Pentastar V6; available Standard-Output or High-Output 3.0L Hurricane I6; available 5.7L HEMI V8 | 6.4L HEMI V8 or available High-Output 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel I6 |
The towing figures are manufacturer-published lineup maximums, not ratings for every truck, and they do not tell you how much payload remains for your trip. Cab, bed, drivetrain, axle ratio, options and the load carried affect the applicable limits. Check towing and payload separately for the truck you are considering.
A Ram 1500 can be the right choice when your fully loaded trailer and everything carried by the truck fit its individual towing, payload and equipment limits. Think about the trip as it leaves home: the boat trailer is loaded, the passengers are aboard and the gear is packed. A trailer’s empty weight alone does not describe that trip. For a truck that spends much of its time around Thomaston and Rockland without a trailer attached, daily use deserves real weight in the decision. Compare the cab, bed, parking fit and driving position once the load requirements are settled. If the 1500 configuration meets the job, a higher heavy-duty maximum by itself is not a reason to dismiss it.
Payload includes the people and cargo carried by the truck, and trailer tongue weight uses part of that capacity. Tongue weight is the downward load the trailer places on the hitch. A trailer can therefore fall below the truck’s tow rating while its tongue weight, passengers and equipment together exceed the truck’s payload allowance. For a work truck, include permanently added equipment as well as the tools and materials that come along each day.
Consider an illustration, not a rating for a specific Ram: a truck with 1,700 lb of payload capacity carries 550 lb of people, 200 lb of cargo and 100 lb of added hitch equipment. That leaves 850 lb for trailer tongue weight. If the loaded trailer places 900 lb on the hitch, the combination is 50 lb over the truck’s payload capacity, even if the trailer’s total weight is below its towing limit. Use the actual truck’s ratings and measured loaded weights to make the final decision; the example does not establish a safe trailer size. All applicable vehicle, trailer and hitch limits still have to be satisfied.
A Ram 2500 deserves the closer look when the loaded combination exceeds a suitable Ram 1500’s ratings or the intended equipment points you toward heavy duty. Regular equipment hauling also makes it worth comparing how each proposed truck accommodates the full working load. The useful question is whether the selected 2500 solves the capacity requirement with the cab, bed and equipment you want. Midcoast truck use can change through the year: a trailer for seasonal recreation, materials for a property project, or equipment moving between jobs. Put those known uses into the same comparison instead of selecting a truck for the lightest week. A Ram 2500 is not automatically sufficient for every trailer; if its limits do not cover the job, discuss a properly configured Ram 3500 or another suitable truck.
Ram does not recommend attaching a snowplow to the 2026 Ram 1500 and directs plow shoppers to Ram 2500, Ram 3500 or Chassis Cab models. For the 2026 Ram 2500, Ram lists Snowplow Prep equipment, but that is not approval for every truck-and-plow combination. Confirm the exact configuration and compatible installation before selecting the truck or blade. Ram also states that the 2026 Ram 1500 cannot tow a fifth-wheel trailer and does not provide bed-modification instructions for that use. The Ram 2500 offers an available Fifth-Wheel/Gooseneck Prep Package. Match the hitch, loaded trailer and pin weight to the specific heavy-duty truck’s limits before proceeding.

Do not assume so. A higher towing maximum does not establish a higher payload rating for the truck you are considering. Compare the selected gas and diesel configurations with the same cab, bed and drivetrain, then use their individual payload ratings to account for the bed load or trailer pin weight. This keeps the engine choice tied to the work the truck must carry as well as pull.
Not necessarily. The lineup maximum may belong to a different cab, drivetrain, bed or axle combination than the truck you want. If you are shopping for a 4x4 Crew Cab, compare ratings for that configuration in each truck line so the decision reflects what you will actually drive.
Bring the trailer’s specifications and loaded weight information, along with an estimate of the passengers, cargo and added equipment the truck will carry. If a plow or fifth-wheel trailer is part of the plan, put it into the conversation at the beginning.
